Opening in 2009, this state of the art facility won the “Community Benefit” category at the Annual Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Awards South East
As part of the three-centre £33m capital leisure investment commitment by the London Borough of Bexley Council, Sidcup Leisure Centre involved the new build construction of a state-of-the-art facility within the heart of the borough. The project posed some difficulty as the relocation of the existing Golf Clubhouse uncovered ground contamination (asbestos and diesel) under the existing golf club house once demolition was complete. This was rectified by a rapid response to minimise the chance of contract prolongation, and the appointment of an independent expert to advise and monitor the implementation of mitigation techniques.
The facility was officially opened for business by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson in 2008. In May 2009 the centre won the ‘Community Benefit’ category at the Annual Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Awards South East. There was plenty of positive local resident feedback and the facility has been described as excellent- generating real benefits for the residents of the London Borough of Bexley. The project also won the ‘Sustainability Category’ in the London District Surveyors Awards Building Excellence Award 2009. The Mitigation Plan for dealing with contamination was implemented successfully and the relocation of the Golf Clubhouse was completed ahead of schedule.
