Oceans of Fun at Rushcliffe Arena

On Friday the 27th October Rushcliffe Arena and Cotgrave Leisure Centre hosted an Oceans of Fun day ran in partnership with Zoggs, The Fun Swim Company.

Olympians Grant Turner, Katie Clark and Fran Clayton, who all competed in the Rio Olympics  last summer, visited both centres to share their skills and knowledge and experiences of swimming.

With over 180 children attending on the day, everyone got to take part in a variety of different activities with the Olympians. These included; Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming, Fast Swimming, Rookie Lifeguarding and CPR.

The water polo activity was led by Fran Clayton, the young swimmers got an introduction to the rules and then enjoyed a quickly friendly match.

Synchronised swimming was led by Katie Clark who expertly demonstrated some moves for the children to watch, which they then tried to replicate with her guidance.

Grant Turner led the next activity which was a quick demonstration of some fast swimming, which was followed by some advice on basic techniques on which the children could use to help them swim a little bit faster.

The fourth station involved activities all based around rookie lifeguarding. These activities included learning to use different objects such as poles or ropes to rescue people out of the water. They also learned some safe ways to enter the water.

The day came to an end with the swimmers being taught about some basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) skills. This included running through the basics of checking the casualty, seeing if they are ok, followed by rescue breaths and compressions.

Once everyone had completed each activity, the young swimmers were all given the opportunity to ‘Race an Olympian’, and then awarded with their own medal and a photo opportunity with the Olympic athletes.
